The event is an annual tribute to those who lost their lives in two world wars and other conflicts.
The day begins with a military and civic procession that leaves Broad Street at 10.15am and marches up High Street, along Horsefair and into St Mary’s Church for a remembrance service at 11am.
The parade then moves into People’s Park for a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial.
Service men and women, veterans and civilians place poppy wreaths at the Cenotaph before a closing ceremony that includes the lowering of flags, a moving rendition of The Last Post and the verse of the Robert Laurence Binyon poem ‘For the Fallen’ that contains the immortal Remembrance Day words ‘at the going down of the sun………’
This year’s tribute is the first since the town’s war memorial was updated to include those who died serving their country in all wars and conflicts at home and abroad.
“Remembrance Day in Banbury, as in towns and villages across Britain, honours those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“Many families in the area have lost loved ones in battle and this is an important and emotional day for them.
“Townspeople turn out in large numbers to watch the parade and wreath-laying – and their presence is always a credit to the town. I hope this year’s event is another day that pays true respect to our war heroes.”
