On 4 January Cherwell District Council’s executive approved an updated Homelessness Prevention Action Plan, to be implemented from April 2016. The plan will continue to provide support through partnerships that focus on the causes of homelessness, and to try to prevent it, rather than providing a crisis response.
As housing pressures grow across the country there is starting be a national shortage of affordable housing. New challenges include the Housing and Planning Bill, increasing rent levels and the effects of welfare reforms.
“The updated action plan makes a clear commitment to homelessness prevention. By adopting this plan we can ensure our service meets changing demand.
“This plan requires close working on joint aims with our partners in the statutory and voluntary sectors, as services respond to the impending funding reductions. In Cherwell we want to provide good quality services and we will be applying for the Government’s Gold Standard accreditation for homelessness services to ensure we continue to meet the best standards. Endorsing this action plan is an important step and I look forward to its implementation helping the council work towards achieving the Gold Standard for homelessness services.”
The Gold Standard is designed to stem future increases in homelessness and rough sleeping by encouraging councils to work with partners to deliver comprehensive preventative services to try and meet the needs of all clients – not just the families and vulnerable individuals who would otherwise be owed a statutory duty.
“Homelessness prevention is not only a more cost effective approach than crisis management, it is also far better for the individuals concerned.”
