Sports clubs in Banbury and Bicester will soon be able to benefit from improved sports pitches following council's investments.

Pitch-a perfect.

Sports clubs in Banbury and Bicester will soon be able to benefit from improved sports pitches following council’s investments.

Cherwell District Council is committing a budget of £290,000 to resurfacing artificial sports pitches at North Oxfordshire Academy (NOA) in Banbury and Cooper School Sports Facility in Bicester. NOA will also be benefitting from upgrades to the floodlight facility which service the sports pitch and athletics track, in a separate investment of £88,000.

Cllr George Reynolds, Cherwell’s deputy leader, said:

“The pitches at North Oxfordshire Academy and Cooper School are heavily used for a whole host of activities, not only for the schoolchildren, but for the wider community who use them.

“We run programmes such as the holiday activity hubs at both sites and have successful hockey clubs at both venues who use the facility as their main training centre and home ground for matches. This investment is set to pay off all-year round and well into the future, helping keep the district fit and active.

“By upgrading the hockey pitch floodlights to LED at NOA we will not only be helping sports activities keep running through the darker winter months, but we will also be reducing electricity consumption into the bargain.”

The work at Cooper School includes the replacement of the shock pad underneath the pitch there, and both facilities’ pitches will continue to be sand dressed. Cleveland Land Services is carrying out the resurfacing works at both schools which are expected to be completed by the end of August.

At NOA, the floodlights on the athletics track are being upgraded to metal halide. Abacus Lighting has been appointed as the contractor for the lighting upgrades there, and the work is intended to be carried out in mid-October.
