Temporary free parking for Banbury and Bicester

Shop for the perfect present with the gift of free parking.

Christmas shoppers can enjoy an early gift from Cherwell District Council by taking advantage of a temporary free parking promotion in Banbury and Bicester on Saturday, 2 December.

In a show of support for Small Business Saturday, car parking fees will be waived at all council-owned car parks from 7pm on Friday, 1 December until 8am on Sunday, 3 December.

The annual promotion has been launched in support of the national campaign to encourage customers to shop at independent retailers on the first Saturday in December.

Cllr George Reynolds, Cherwell’s deputy leader, said:

“Small Business Saturday is all about putting the focus on independent traders and giving them the chance to showcase what they have to offer. Unlike national chains or High Street brands, small businesses offer a specialist shopping experience which includes a more personalised service and exclusive gift ideas that can’t be found elsewhere.

“To demonstrate our support for this campaign, we are lifting the parking charges in our car parks to encourage people to take a trip into town and browse the unique opportunities on offer. We can’t afford to offer free parking all year round, so I would encourage as many people as possible to take advantage of this promotion whilst enjoying the festive buzz that can’t be replicated by shopping online.”

Signs will be displayed at the entrance to participating car parks and at ticket machines in Banbury and Bicester advertising free parking on Saturday, 2 December.

Car parking charges currently apply in Cherwell District Council’s Banbury and Bicester car parks between 8am and 7pm. There is no charge to park in Kidlington car parks as these are covered by a covenant preventing fees being introduced.

Participating Cherwell District Council car parks will be clearly signposted. As it is not a car park, the Bridge Street drop off point in Banbury will not be included in the promotion.

Throughout the promotion, usual parking conditions will apply including the length of stay.

Cherwell’s car parks are operated by APCOA, which has recently enhanced the payment options to include online, credit/debit card and contactless payments alongside the traditional coin and telephone options.
