Canal Day, Banbury Folk Festival and the town’s Trafalgar Parade, all in one day. Banbury will be the place to visit on Sunday 14 October – with three fantastic events coming together to delight residents and tourists.
Canal Day will remember the history of Banbury’s canal with a fun-filled family day out.
Dozens of colourful narrowboats will remind visitors that the waterway, which opened in 1778, was an important factor in Banbury’s growth, wealth and development.
Free boat rides, stalls and entertainment along the towpaths, with a funfair and other attractions including an arts and crafts market, dance displays plus food and drink stalls in Spiceball Park from 10.30am to 4.30pm will entertain people of all ages.
Banbury Folk Festival is an all-weekend event run by Banbury Folk Club and features some of the country’s best folk singers and musicians including 25 Years Late and Fairport Convention.
Canal Day visitors will be treated to free folk sessions in the garden of General Food’s Social Club on the canalside.
Banbury Sea Cadets will host the district Trafalgar Day Parade for the first time since 2010. A procession through town will mark the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar which took place on 21 October 1805.
The parade of sea cadets, marine cadets, plus army and air cadets and officers will be joined by special guests including high ranking VIPs from Oxfordshire.
“I’m really looking forward to October 14th. There will be so much going on and it is fantastic that the organisers of three events can work together to put on such a fabulous day.
“Canal Day is always popular and by working in partnership with the other events, Banbury will be putting on a day to remember.”
“Banbury Folk Festival is proud to be associated with Canal Day. Banbury has a long tradition of folk and roots music and the festival will bring a weekend of high class live music alongside the colour and vibrancy of Canal Day.”
“Cadets from Banbury, Oxford, Abingdon, Marlow, High Wycombe, Aylesbury and Milton Keynes. Cadets will provide a scene of blue suits throughout the town.
“The parade will leave the town hall after an inspection at 1.10pm and march from the town hall up High Street, round the cross to St Mary’s Church for a service.”
