Residents can become prize-winning gardeners without spending a penny on tools, seeds, soil or fertilisers.
Banbury Town Council is seeking men and women of all ages to carry out voluntary work at the Community Garden in People’s Park.
The project means that people who might live in homes with small gardens or without gardens – and who do not want the formality of having an allotment – can enjoy gardening on a ‘when-I-want-to-do-it’ basis. People with large gardens and some spare time are also welcome.
They will grow fruit, flowers and vegetables that will be entered in Banbury’s Flower and Produce Show in August – with the chance of winning coveted prize rosettes.
There is no charge and everything needed will be provided – though sensible clothes and footwear are advisable.
Volunteers, including groups from local charities, can work on Thursdays between 9.30am and 4pm (all day or part of the day).
Experienced gardeners willing to share their knowledge are especially welcome, and hours might be available on other days of the week by arrangement with the council.
It is not just a good weather garden. With a large greenhouse and poly tunnel there is plenty to do in all weathers.
“It’s a chance for people to meet new friends and enjoy doing something worthwhile with absolutely no pressure or commitment.
“They can come as often or as little as they want, but they will get the satisfaction of seeing the results of their efforts as the fruit, flowers and vegetables mature until they are ready to pick and eat. Seeing our entries on display at the Flower and Produce Show is also very satisfying – especially when the judges think they’re worthy of a prize.”
Banbury’s community garden is approx half an acre of land in People’s Park that was set aside as a place to be enjoyed and cultivated by townspeople. It is in the corner of the park near Banbury Borough Bowls Club.
The garden has existing volunteers but more are needed. Those interested can contact Banbury Town Council on 01295 250340 or call in at the town hall in Bridge Street. The community garden is open to visit when the park rangers are there.
