A poem about Banbury Lock on Oxford Canal.

Memories of days long past
Spent at Banbury lock
Swing Bridge chain to swing upon
And gates to purge and block

There wasn’t any real need
Something to pass the time
I wish I hadn’t started this
It’ll be a devil to rhyme

In holidays and after school
I’d run from end to end
Swing the bridge pull the gate
Sometimes with a friend

The boatman were quite happy
Young lads to do the job
Sometimes tip their caps in thanks
Sometimes throw a bob

It didn’t matter what came through
So many crafts that float
Barges of all sizes
Even bathtubs for a boat

Oh so many memories
But one it reigns supreme
That once beside our Banbury lock
We had a submarine !!..
