Cancellations include all annual events until July and all bookings at the town hall. The council will continue to monitor the annual events situation on a regular basis.
The monthly councillor surgeries that enable voters to meet elected members have also been put on hold.
Closures – in line with government guidance announced on Monday evening – include the council’s playgrounds, play areas and multi-use play spaces. Parents with children off school are asked to abide by the restrictions to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Funerals will go ahead as normal and parks will stay open for exercise but not for gatherings of more than two people.
Time will stand still in Banbury for the foreseeable future. The people who wind the town’s public clocks, including at the town hall, will be unable to do so while closure restrictions are in place.
“These closures and cancellations are essential if we are going to prevent the spread of coronavirus. It is affecting all aspects of family life and working conditions.
“Banbury Town Council is operating electronically so that decisions can be made without councillors attending meetings.
“Regarding play areas and playgrounds I’m asking parents and children not to ignore the closures. It is impossible to fence off more than 50 play and teenage areas and we are therefore relying on people to behave sensibly.”
“We will continue to monitor the annual events. We might be able to rearrange some for later in the year – but that’s a decision for the future.”
The annual events cancelled are Taste of Spring food festival, Film Friday, VE Day Tea Dance, Banbury and District Show, and Armed Forces Day.
