Two iconic World War Two fighter planes will fly over Banbury on Sunday (15 September) as serving military personnel, veterans, cadets and civic dignitaries line up below.
The battle was fought in the skies above southern England in the summer and autumn of 1940 and the RAF’s defeat of the Luftwaffe was a major factor in preventing Hitler’s forces from invading England.
The flypast will be the highlight of Banbury’s 2019 Battle of Britain Day, organised by Banbury Town Council, which will begin at 11.30am.
A military and civic parade will march from Broad Street, up High Street, into Horsefair, and to St Mary’s Church for a memorial service.
After the service the parade will line up in Horsefair to await the flypast – scheduled for 12.48.
The parade will then return to Broad Street with the marchers taking the salute near the bandstand in High Street.
“Battle of Britain Day pays tribute to those who defended this country in the most courageous way. They must never be forgotten.”
A flypast by a Dakota transport plane was originally planned for the event but Banbury’s Air Cadets, who are organising the flypast, have achieved a major coup in getting the fighter planes.
The Hawker Hurricane is a British fighter plane of the 1930/40s that was designed and built by Hawker Aircraft for the RAF. It was the most numerous of RAF’s aircraft during the Battle of Britain and was used by 33 squadrons.
The Supermarine Spitfire is a British fighter plane used by the RAF and allied countries before, during, and after WW2. It was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft and its slim wing design gave it a higher top speed than other fighter planes, including the Hurricane.
