Free prize draw for those who enter cycle to work day.

People are being encouraged to get on their bikes for the commute to work this week and could win free passes for leisure centres in South Northamptonshire.

South Northamptonshire Council (SNC) hopes anyone who can, will cycle to work on Wednesday, 14 September to support the national Cycle to Work Day.

District residents who post a picture of themselves cycling to work on social media, with the hashtag #cycletoworkday, will be entered in to the council’s free prize draw for leisure centre passes.

Cllr Karen Cooper, SNC’s portfolio holder for community engagement and wellbeing, said:

“In our rural area not everyone has the option to cycle to work. But Wednesday looks set to be a fine day and I would urge anyone who lives and works in our market towns to consider it test run for an alternative to the daily commute in a car.

“You’ll be doing yourself a favour by being healthier, and will make life a little bit easier for those who have no choice but to run the daily traffic gauntlet.”

Census data shows around 741,000 people cycle to work in the UK and those behind Cycle to Work Day hope that one million people will be opting to pedal their way to the office by 2021.

SNC also encourages people to take up cycling recreationally and has details on national cycling initiatives and cycle route guides to the district on its website, visit – www.southnorthants.gov.uk/5455.htm.

The Council is also promoting Cycle to Work Day internally, including a reminder of the Government’s Cycle to Work scheme which provides discounts on new bikes for those that commute on them – www.cycle2work.info/employees
