Jo Padmini Badger Answers the Proust Questionnaire

Yoga Teacher Jo Padmini Badger, ponders her meanings of life.

In 1890, long before he claimed his status as one of the greatest authors of all time Marcel Proust, still a teenager, took a questionnaire similar to this one, answering the questions with frank sincerity.

Proust: Those of romance and poetry, those who are the expression of an ideal rather than an imitation of the real

Proust: A mixture of Socrates, Pericles, Mahomet, Pliny the Younger and Augustin Thierry

Who are your favourite heroines in real life?

Proust: A woman of genius leading an ordinary life

Jo Padmini Badger: Swami Radha and Swami Vidyananda, all good Foster Mothers, Midwives and all women that work in a ‘man’s world’, including CEO’s, Fire-Women and Police-Women, to name but a few.

Who are your favourite heroines of fiction?

Proust: Those who are more than women without ceasing to be womanly; everything that is tender, poetic, pure and in every way beautiful

Jo Padmini Badger: Susan from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and any female character in a Margaret Drabble novel.

Your favourite painter?

Proust: Meissonier

Jo Padmini Badger: Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Your favourite musician?

Proust: Mozart

Jo Padmini Badger: Mozart and Vivaldi

The quality you most admire in a man?

Proust: Intelligence, moral sense

Jo Padmini Badger: Compassion, Patience, Logic

The quality you most admire in a woman?

Proust: Gentleness, naturalness, intelligence

Jo Padmini Badger: That she knows she is a Goddess and is living that Truth!

Proust: All virtues that are not limited to a sect: the universal virtues

Jo Padmini Badger: Humility

Your favourite occupation?

Proust: Reading, dreaming, and writing verse

Jo Padmini Badger: Yoga and everything to do with being part of a family as Wife, Mother, Nanda and dog and cat carer!

Who would you have liked to be?

Proust: Since the question does not arise, I prefer not to answer it. All the same, I should very much have liked to be Pliny the Younger.

Jo Padmini Badger: I’m happy the way things are. If pushed to choose, I guess it might have been cool to be a female astronaut landing on the moon!
