Local people answer the Proust Questionnaire

Entrepreneur Nancy Buckley, ponders her meanings of life.

In 1890, long before he claimed his status as one of the greatest authors of all time Marcel Proust, still a teenager, took a questionnaire similar to this one, answering the questions with frank sincerity.

Banburyshire Info have resurrected the concept, and have started publishing answers from various local people with some questions from the Proust Questionnaire – designed to reveal the answerer’s tastes, aspirations, and sensibility.

Proust: In the country of the Ideal, or, rather, of my ideal

Nancy Buckley: Rome or anywhere in Italy

What is your idea of earthly happiness?

Proust: To live in contact with those I love, with the beauties of nature, with a quantity of books and music, and to have, within easy distance, a French theater

Nancy Buckley: Being outdoors with the sun on my face listening to birdsong or the lapping of waves on a beach

To what faults do you feel most indulgent?

Proust: To a life deprived of the works of genius

Nancy Buckley: Always wanting more rather than enjoying what I have already in the here and now. I can’t stand still and am trying to learn mindfulness to relax!

Who are your favourite heroes of fiction?

Proust: Those of romance and poetry, those who are the expression of an ideal rather than an imitation of the real

Nancy Buckley:: Count Dracula is rather alluring… vampire fiction appeals to me so I should probably also add Twilight’s Edward Cullen!

Who are your favourite characters in history?

Proust: A mixture of Socrates, Pericles, Mahomet, Pliny the Younger and Augustin Thierry

Nancy Buckley: For some reason I’ve always been fascinated by Eva Peron, and Evita has been a favourite musical of mine since my grandmother played me an Elaine Paige LP as a young girl. Cleopatra too! I love anything Roman and Egyptian.

Who are your favourite heroines in real life?

Proust: A woman of genius leading an ordinary life

Nancy Buckley: All of the hardworking mums out there juggling careers, home, love and life!

Who are your favourite heroines of fiction?

Proust: Those who are more than women without ceasing to be womanly; everything that is tender, poetic, pure and in every way beautiful

Nancy Buckley: Catherine Earnshaw, Wuthering Heights. She is the ultimate free spirit and epitome of wildness. Or maybe Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, how amazing was that new technicolour world…?

Your favourite painter?

Proust: Meissonier

Nancy Buckley: Vincent Van Gogh, Banksy.

Your favourite musician?

Proust: Mozart

Your answer: Damien Rice, Kate Bush, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie

The quality you most admire in a man?

Proust: Intelligence, moral sense

Nancy Buckley: Height, good hair and teeth, humour and manners

The quality you most admire in a woman?

Proust: Gentleness, naturalness, intelligence

Nancy Buckley: Confidence, competitiveness, natural beauty

Your favourite virtue?

Proust: All virtues that are not limited to a sect: the universal virtues

Nancy Buckley: kindness and generosity of spirit

Your favourite occupation?

Proust: Reading, dreaming, and writing verse

Nancy Buckley: Reading, walking,swimming in the sea and as a mother of young children, sleeping!

Who would you have liked to be?

Proust: Since the question does not arise, I prefer not to answer it. All the same, I should very much have liked to be Pliny the Younger.

Nancy Buckley: Somebody beautiful, wealthy and hip in the roaring ‘20s or swinging 60’s! Or how about that glorious woman in La Dolce Vita?
