Proust: In the country of the Ideal, or, rather, of my ideal

Nancy Buckley: Rome or anywhere in Italy

What is your idea of earthly happiness?

Proust: To live in contact with those I love, with the beauties of nature, with a quantity of books and music, and to have, within easy distance, a French theater

Nancy Buckley: Being outdoors with the sun on my face listening to birdsong or the lapping of waves on a beach

Who are your favourite heroes of fiction?

Proust: Those of romance and poetry, those who are the expression of an ideal rather than an imitation of the real

Nancy Buckley:: Count Dracula is rather alluring… vampire fiction appeals to me so I should probably also add Twilight’s Edward Cullen!

Who are your favourite characters in history?

Proust: A mixture of Socrates, Pericles, Mahomet, Pliny the Younger and Augustin Thierry

Nancy Buckley: For some reason I’ve always been fascinated by Eva Peron, and Evita has been a favourite musical of mine since my grandmother played me an Elaine Paige LP as a young girl. Cleopatra too! I love anything Roman and Egyptian.

Who are your favourite heroines in real life?

Proust: A woman of genius leading an ordinary life

Nancy Buckley: All of the hardworking mums out there juggling careers, home, love and life!

Who are your favourite heroines of fiction?

Proust: Those who are more than women without ceasing to be womanly; everything that is tender, poetic, pure and in every way beautiful

Nancy Buckley: Catherine Earnshaw, Wuthering Heights. She is the ultimate free spirit and epitome of wildness. Or maybe Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, how amazing was that new technicolour world…?

Your favourite painter?

Proust: Meissonier

Nancy Buckley: Vincent Van Gogh, Banksy.

Your favourite musician?

Proust: Mozart

Your answer: Damien Rice, Kate Bush, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie
