Banbury’s Cherwell Theatre Company are delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for Oxfordshire’s young theatre-makers this August, in partnership with The Warriner School, Bloxham.
The company will present ‘The Monstrum’ a contemporary play by Kellie Smith at The Warriner School on Friday August 10 at 4pm as part of a ‘Play in a Week’ workshop.
This follows 2017’s summer production of ‘The Boy Preference’ by Elinor Cook, which saw 15 young performers rehearse and perform the play with a professional theatre director.
Young people will once again have the opportunity to develop their acting, movement and voice skills, as well as gaining experience in the technical disciplines of theatre, such as stage management, design, costume, props, lighting and sound in this intensive course, which takes place from 10am-6pm Monday 6 August to Friday 10 August at The Warriner School, Bloxham.
“As always we are keen to make our work as inclusive and accessible as possible for the young theatre makers in our area. Thanks to generous support CTC is once again able to offer this fantastic opportunity to young people of 12 years and upwards for just £50.00”
“We also have a number of bursary places available and accept applications from anyone interested in taking part. No experience is necessary, just imagination and enthusiasm!”
‘The Monstrum’, which is directed by Mr Pate and Participation Director Nicki Stevenson, was first performed as part of the National Theatre Connections Festival in 2017, and is set in a cold village on the edge of nowhere, where a mysterious outbreak of infection is transforming young people into monstrous creatures.
‘The play deals with a small community’s reaction to this change in their children’ Said Mr Pate ‘Some believe the illness can be treated and contained, others believe it must be stamped out entirely. It’s a funny and surprising play in which young voices are key- ripe material to explore with our young performers.’
Though CTC has an existing youth group who will take part, Mr Pate is keen to welcome new people to the company.
“It’s the perfect introduction to our work for the uninitiated. The workshop is a chance to find out more about how theatre is made, improve your confidence, and make new friends in a collaborative and creative environment.”
If you are aged 12+ and are interested in taking part, please visit the company’s website for further information at www.cherwelltheatrecompany.co.uk
