Cycle to Work Day

Residents and employers are being encouraged to step up a gear and take part in Cycle to Work Day.

Cherwell District Council has pledged its support to the national event, which takes place on 14 September, and is offering incentives to those who take part.

Residents who post their cycle commuting photos or stories on the #cycletoworkday hashtag can enter the council’s prize draw for a chance to win free leisure centre passes.

Cllr Barry Wood, leader of Cherwell District Council, said:

“Cycling is a green and healthy alternative to driving. In recent years it has experienced a strong surge in participation, inspired in part by the success of British athletes in the Tour de France and Olympics.

“We have to factor low-carbon transport into our plans for district growth, and that is why our Bicester delivery team is providing new bike paths such as the Langford Route.

“The high attendance at Bicester Bike Day in July shows how popular cycling is in Cherwell and I hope as many of us as possible will enjoy a fun and safe ride to work on 14 September.”

Bicester will be a focal point for Cycle to Work Day in the district. People who want to cycle to work but don’t yet own a bike can borrow one of Cherwell’s from Bicester Green. The council additionally supports the publication of cycle route maps through the EcoBicester website.

Over 700,000 people in the UK regularly cycle to work, and the aim is to boost this number still further. By pledging to ride, participants stand a chance of winning one of three prize bicycles offered by Cycle to Work Day.

The council will also be encouraging residents who get the bike bug on the day to make cycling a habit. Through the Get Oxfordshire Active programme, Cherwell will be offering participants the opportunity to continue their involvement in cycling by encouraging them to go on regular rides with local cycling clubs.

To be entered into the social media prize draw residents must share their updates on Twitter or Facebook and tag Cherwell District Council.

Cherwell is promoting the day to its staff, who will also be sharing their cycling stories and photos on the day. To pledge to ride to work on Wednesday, 14 September, visit www.cycletoworkday.org.
