Various theories as to when the bride started carrying flowers, but most sources agree that it developed because … well…. the Elizabethan bride wouldn’t have necessarily had a bath for a while, and of course it was some years before anti-perspirant made its début, so her bouquet would have been there to disguise any nasty niffs!
Originally, the bouquet would have comprised herbs, such as rosemary, sage, lavender, mint, marigold – as well as garlic and chives to ward off jealous spirits .
The royal brides have long included a sprig of myrtle (for constancy) in their bouquet, and Catherine was the latest bride to do this when she married Prince William
Fashions and fads come and go in wedding flowers. Take a look at your parents’ and grandparents’ wedding photos to see what I mean! My grandma (who married in 1920) had a very neat, small posy of anemones. But my Mum, for her wedding in 1952, had a HUGE shower bouquet of red carnations and maidenhair fern, trailing almost to her knee! The chaps all wore red carnation buttonholes to match. It seemed that red roses were for the big budgets and carnations if you didn’t have as much cash to splash. And whatever happened to maidenhair fern?
In the 1970s, bouquets were often circular, with a little lace doily backing. Also fashionable for a while were feather flowers, whilst silk flowers were just making an appearance.
Gypsophila comes in and out of fashion regularly – florists all report it making a comeback right now. It is a great filler and can be used on its own as a bridesmaid bouquet, especially for budget conscious brides – best with stronger shaded dresses to show it off.
Flower Crowns are all the rage now in BoHo weddings – Crown and Glory do these in silk versions, or florists such as Claire Higgs of Hibiscus Floral Design can make them from fresh flowers. She has also done flower necklaces and collars, and wrist corsages – a great idea for bridesmaids, or as a special touch for the mother of the bride. A wrist corsage is also a great alternative for the mother of the bride, if her outfit is of a very light fabric such as chiffon which might not support flowers.
The tradition of throwing the bouquet came about as a safety measure for the bride! Again, tradition has it that the bride’s wedding dress was a good luck charm, and all the single female guests would try to rip a piece of the bride’s dress in the hope that they too, would soon be wed. So, in a bid to distract the guests from ripping her dress off her back, a bride would throw her bouquet to the maidens. the one who caught it would be next to be married.
Many brides now love their bouquets so much, that they order a second, smaller bouquet from their florist as a ‘throwing bouquet’. They can then get their own bouquet preserved as a keepsake, or even framed in a shadow box.
Preserving your bouquet can be quite expensive, but there are other options. Why not have it sketched in pastels, or painted in acrylic or watercolour and framed?
Another tradition to consider is to place your bouquet on the grave of a loved one. Catherine Middleton placed hers (just as Queen Victoria did) on the tomb of the unknown soldier in Westminster Abbey. What a lovely gesture.
Nowadays, there are so many alternatives to floral displays – quite a boon for the hayfever sufferer! There are silk flowers that are so realistic it’s hard to tell the difference from fresh blooms, foam flowers, button bouquets, brooch bouquets (consisting solely of glittering paste brooches), bouquets consisting of one huge flower, or modernist versions twisted wire and pearl decorative strands…
For fresh flowers, it seems scent is the order of the day. Roses are coming back in a big way, and scented flowers: peonies, roses, lily of the valley and freesias remain popular… Colours are either soft and muted; pink, cream, lavender, peach … or they are vibrant and bright (especially in gerbera), yellow, hot pink, lime, orange…
Finally, I asked the florists to send me photographs of one of their favourite bouquets – how tough did they find that assignment? They love what they do, and one florist said it was like asking to choose their favourite child!
From Claire Higgs of Hibiscus Floral Design: a beautiful traditional shower bouquet in the ever popular purple and white – the stamens have been removed (another tip – the pollen stains everything yellow!) and replaced with tiny jewelled stems
Sarah Pearce, of Bloomin Events, presents a bouquet of roses in pastel shades, this time accented with pearls:
And from Jack Haddon Florists in Northamptonshire, we have a symphony of very simple but effective bouquets in Peach and Coral, colours that have seen them rise in popularity this year
