The Debt By Kay Stevens

Remembrance Day Poem by Kay Stevens. The Debt.

The world today is out in force
Honouring our dead, of course
Brave, heroic every one
Posthumous praise for lives now gone.

And I join in with grateful thanks
For lives laid down to stop the tanks
For young men, bodies torn apart
Bullets also piercing the mother’s heart.

Their sacrifice was not in vain
The world could heal itself again
And freedoms that were so hard earned
Can foster lessons newly learned

We owe it to those fallen sons
To make our futures worthwhile ones
Because of futures never tasted
Let no opportunity be wasted

Live your lives as you know you should
Teach your children of the good
There is inside us all to find
And one day- we’ll leave war behind
So honour the fallen well today
Remember their mothers as you pray

Their sons have paid the highest price
Mothers still suffer the sacrifice
Make their loss worth the pay
Keep peace in your heart, every day
The senseless loss makes sense at last
When strife is truly in the past

And one last thing , before you go
Why does this day inspire me so?
It is because I know the pain
Of a son who won’t come home again
A car, not bullets, cut him down
Not for him the hero’s crown
By his own wish he gave away
His body, five people lived that day

Other mother’s who’d said goodbye
took home their children, to live, not die
I hope you will join me when I say
My son was a hero, too that day.
