The NHS and me: People, patients, clients and choices

Are you on a waiting list to see a talking practitioner?

The list is long within the NHS, yet there are other avenues to harness relief, a sense of happiness and emotional well-being.

Other talking therapists are being called to advertise on and within the Banbury Medical Centres. I sense, with my fingers on the pulse, the NHS is a victim of its own success. GP’s, nurses and their talking therapists who are usually CBT or EMDR trained, are overwhelmed with mental health issues – the waiting list is at least 3-6 months and offer a maximum of 10 sessions. The NHS can only do so much with the funds and time available to them. They also need funds to keep their practice going. I applaud them for all their hard work and their endeavours to meet at the point of need.

However, private practitioners (like me) also work hard to live. Our profession is not a hobby and sometimes, if not often, we have availability. Yes, prices start at as little as £10 for a counsellor-in-training and increase depending on what needs to be worked through. I am little struck that the NHS is often a closed shop. Fair enough, but where does this leave you in your moment of need?

The talking therapies is as diverse and as unique as you. Sticking plasters (like CBT) are good for those who need short term interventions and right now relief. I’ve noticed though how some mental health issues are deep rooted and usually stem from childhood. Relationships and attachments facilitate, or deter, your own personal, professional and relatedness growth.

The talking therapies is as diverse and as unique as you.

You do have a choice. You can try the NHS and I wish you every success in getting your emotional needs met. You can also choose a different path and whilst it will cost, the deep wounds can be healed sooner and prevent you from a downward experiential spiral staircase of:

  • being abused – physically, emotionally, sexually and/or
  • neglectfully
  • feeling angry
  • feeling anxious
  • bereaved
  • bullying
  • depression
  • isolation
  • loss, ie pet, home, job, identity, youthfulness – the list is endless
  • Pressures – stress, work, exams, fitting in
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • regret
  • sadness
  • self harm
  • suicidal thoughts
  • suicidal ideation

All the best to you. Go well and PS: I didn’t write this to earn money. It’s because I care. Off now to listen to “I’d like to teach the world to sing….”
