Doors prepare to open for general election day

Banbury constituency polling stations are general election ready.

Polling stations will open across the country on Thursday (8 June) as millions of people are expected to turn out to vote in this year’s general election.

Across the Banbury constituency 110 polling stations will be open from 7am – 10pm to enable eligible voters to choose their MP. A total of 83,720 people are eligible to vote.

Paul Sutton, Acting Returning Officer for the Banbury constituency, said:

“The deadline to register to vote or apply for postal or proxy votes has now passed which means anyone who has not yet received a polling card or confirmation of a postal or proxy vote will not be able to have their say. For everyone else, they will need to decide how they would like to vote and ensure they attend the polling station or return their postal vote before polls close at 10pm on 8 June.

“For us we then have the important job of verifying and counting the votes overnight. This involves every ballot paper being verified, sorted and counted. Accuracy is crucial to this and as we can’t predict how many people will take part in the vote, we can’t predict what time a result will be declared.”

People who have received a poll card to vote in a polling station can cast their vote between 7am and 10pm. They do not need to take their poll card with them but they will need to go to their allocated polling station as they cannot vote elsewhere.

Anyone who applied for a postal vote will need to ensure it is received by the council by no later than 10pm on Thursday, 8 June. Those who forget to post it in time can still ensure their vote is counted by handing it into any polling station in their constituency on the day. They will not be allowed to vote in person at a polling station.

Although they are too young to vote, children are welcome to attend polling stations with their parents. If any voter requires special assistance they can contact the council on 01295 227005.
