Banbury Rotary Club raise ‘End Polio’ awareness with crocus plants.

Rotarians in Banbury are getting ready to plant 50,000 crocus bulbs as part of a national campaign to wipe out polio across the world.

The bulbs will go into public areas, local parks and schools.

In addition to the mass planting, members of Banbury Rotary Club will be out and about in town selling crocus buttonholes to members of the public in aid of the End Polio Now Campaign.

Since 2012 Rotary Crocuses have raised around £1,000,000 which has been distributed in 15 countries in the battle against the crippling disease.

Local organiser Rotarian Fred Riches said:

“Children in countries having the polio vaccination have a finger marked with a purple dye to show who has received the vaccine – and to prevent them receiving the dose twice. The crocus was chosen as our emblem because its purple colour matches the dye.”

He added:

We offer fabric crocus buttonholes to members of the public in return for a donation. When donors wear their crocuses they become walking advertisements for the campaign.”

Each crocus carries an information card which tells the story of the eradication programme and Rotary’s role in it.

Banbury mayor Gordon Ross, who joined rotarians on Friday to launch this year’s campaign, said:

“This is a wonderful project and I wish Banbury Rotary Club every success.

“The crocuses will add colour to parts of Banbury, and the club will raise money for an extremely worthwhile cause.”
