Banbury is set to get a new Waitrose supermarket following approval from Cherwell District Council’s planning committee.
The proposed development will see the construction of a new food store with car parking and access from Southam Road.
The 1.44 hectare site is situated on the western side of Southam Road, Banbury and is currently part of the Jacobs Douwe Egberts site.
The new supermarket will be a single storey building with a total floorspace of 3,695 sq.metres of which the sales area would be 2,697 sq.metres. The car park will will 220 dedicated spaces.
“We are aware that some felt that this was not the correct place in Banbury for a new supermarket. However the council took independent advice, which showed the store would not have a significant detrimental effect on town centre trade and it will create increased shopping opportunities for residents.”
The application was made by Barwood Capital and Mondelez International and had been recommended for approval.
