Cherwell District Council announce a game changing new anchor for Castle Quay shopping centre in Banbury – Lock29.
A unique, creative leisure space filling 30,000 sq ft of the former BHS store, this vibrant food and beverage anchor will reinvigorate this empty space and create a new destination within the town.
Lock29 will open in March 2020 and offers something currently not found in the region.
Taking its name from the Banbury Lock, it will be a one-of-a-kind leisure destination that seeks to bring the town’s history into the new venue and offer an experience like no other. The diverse offer within Lock29 will provide something for the whole of Banbury and beyond.
This new focus for Castle Quay will feature diverse and exciting food and drink artisans, a casual screening venue for secret cinema clubs and educational activities, while also extending to florists, barbers and a variety of other products and services.
This sustainable community destination will have a multifunctional events space at its centre, delivering a unique and memorable events programme that will appeal to all.
The local community will have its first taste of Lock29 later this year when the screening venue opens, showing films and educational programmes for children.
The original Banbury Lock No 29 on the Oxford Canal.
An engineering beauty completed in 1778 when the canal reached Banbury. Financial problems meant that work on the final stretch to Oxford did not begin until 1786.
Banbury has many visitor moorings alongside the historic and modern shopping areas in the middle of town.
