National success for Banbury Cross Twirling Club members.

A 15-year-old Banbury gymnast has been chosen to represent England in two major tournaments – at the increasingly-popular sport of Twirling.

Aisha Halford will travel to Mouilleron-Le-Captif, France, in July for the European Championships and then to Limoges in August for an International Cup competition.

She will compete in the freestyle event in the EU championships and inthe solo twirl and two-baton categories in the International Cup.

Aisha was selected after eye-catching performances in the three-day British Baton Twirling Championships held in Crawley recently where other members of the Banbury Cross Twirling Club also put in notable efforts.

Twirling is a world-wide sport that combines gymnastics, dance, agility, and co-ordination while manipulating batons or pom poms.

The British championships saw more than 300 competitors from England and Scotland compete for medals.

Aisha came fifth in the two-baton event and seventh in the senior fancy strut class – and did enough to impress the selectors.

Also at the championships, Banbury’s Iris Duarte, age 12, won gold in the junior two-baton category and became national champion in her age group.

Banbury came third in the team twirl challenge contest while individual achievements included – Anya Buzzard, 11, sixth in the novice fancy strut; Abbie Buzzard, 14, sixth in the intermediate solo twirl with Iris Duart in seventh spot.

In the two-baton class Katy Rayner, 11, was seventh in the junior novice solo; and with Millie Trinder, 14, achieved second in the junior pairs section.

Rita Duarte, 7, was seventh in the tiny tots dance twirl and Billi McFadden, 13, took the same position in the junior dance twirl.

Abbie Buzzard and Iris Duarte were fourth in the artistic pairs.

Banbury club leader Janet Green said;

“We are extremely pleased with their results at the championships. To be in the top six or seven in this sort of competition is a fantastic achievement.”

“It’s great for Aisha to be picked to represent England and we wish her well in France.”

Aisha said:

“I’m so thrilled to be picked for England and I’m really looking forward to the competition. I’m practising hard and I’m determined to do well.”
