Banbury’s Bretch Hill is preparing to bid farewell to an old youth centre building as preparations gather pace for its replacement.
The demolition of the old Hill Youth and Community Centre building begins on Monday, 6 August, with Cherwell District Council having appointed ARD to carry out the work. The new centre is being supported by a £600,000 investment from Cherwell and £350,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England.
The demolition work is scheduled to take three weeks. Meanwhile, the council is taking tender submissions from contractors who have expressed an interest in building the centre, with the award of the contract expected in September.
“The start of demolition work is an important milestone in the delivery of a high-quality new youth centre. It will be an important focal point for Bretch Hill and the wider community and I am excited to see contractors arriving on site.
“To ensure work on the new building starts as soon as possible, we have separated the contract for the demolition of the old centre from the construction contract. This means we can run the tender process while the demolition work is taking place.
“We are in close contact with residents in the immediate vicinity of the old building to make sure they are aware of the work, and to minimise any disruption. While the demolition is underway, council officers will be hard at work preparing for the appointment of a building contractor, which we look forward to announcing in the coming weeks.”
In addition to the funding from Cherwell and Sport England, Banbury Charities and Banbury Town Council are each contributing £10,000 towards the project. A further £80,000 will be made up from Section 106 contributions which is money paid by developers of large housing projects to fund community infrastructure.
