Cherwell District Council fail to deliver Youth and Community Centre

Cherwell District Council fail to deliver Youth and Community Centre.

The Leader of Cherwell District Council has apologised for the authority’s failure to deliver a new centre for users of a valued youth centre in Banbury.

At a meeting of the council’s Executive and under questioning from ward councillor and Labour Group Leader Sean Woodcock, Councillor Barry Wood said that he was “very sorry” and accepted “culpability” for the fact that The Hill Youth Centre, in Ruscote ward, has still not been provided with a permanent base.

The Hill provides youth and intervention services to residents in Ruscote which remains one of the most deprive wards in the country. A hole appeared in the roof of the building in November 2013 which meant that some services at the centre had to stop because it was unsafe. In 2015 the council agreed to fund the demolition and rebuilding of a new centre but so far no progress has been made on the site which is now abandoned.

Councillor Woodcock at the meeting said:

“This failure lays squarely at the feet of this council and an apology is frankly long overdue.”

The meeting of Cherwell District Council’s Executive took place on Monday 4 June 2018. Discussion of The Hill took place under Item 8. “End of Year 2017-2018 Performance, Finance and Risk Monitoring Report (pp. 29-52)
